Second Opinion

Before you buy a diamond elsewhere, have it read.

Send the report number and the price another jeweller quoted you. We read it and write back with what we would ask before paying.

What to send

A report number and a price are enough.

  • Report numberWe look it up with the laboratory ourselves, so the report we read is the one the lab holds.
  • Quoted priceFor the stone alone if you have it, or for the whole ring.
  • Listing linkOptional. It tells us what the price includes.
  • Shape, weight and gradeOptional. With them we can show comparable stones from Dagarias as soon as you send.

We use your email to send the reading, which includes comparable stones from Dagarias. It is not added to a mailing list.

What you get back

One of three answers, with the reasons.

Example reading

Colour / clarity

Ratio

Depth / table
62.1% / 59%
Fluorescence
None
Quoted
CA$3,400 for the ring
  • ReportMatches the laboratory's record.
  • ProportionsA 1.38 ratio is a classic oval outline. Depth is fine.
  • Not on the reportBow tie. Every oval has one and a report does not grade it, so this reading cannot judge it.
  • PriceThe seller quoted one price for the whole ring. Comparable loose stones list between CA$1,400 and CA$2,100, so the setting may be carrying CA$1,300 or more.

Our answerAsk the seller one question first: how much of the CA$3,400 is the stone.

What we read

The report, and what it leaves out.

  • The report itselfChecked against the laboratory's own record.
  • ProportionsDepth, table and ratio decide how large and how bright the stone looks.
  • What a report cannot showBow tie, tint, haze and how a fancy shape handles light. The reading says where the report stops.
  • The priceSet against comparable stones on the market that week.
  • Comparable stones from DagariasEvery reading names the stones we hold of the same grade, with our price where it is the lower one.
  • The setting, if there is oneMetal and karat, where the listing gives them.

What we do not do

The limits, stated up front.

  • We do not regradeThe grade belongs to the laboratory. We read its report.
  • We have not seen the stoneThe reading covers the report and the listing, and says where that falls short.
  • We do not comment on the sellerYou do not need to name them.
  • We do not bend the readingIt always lists our own comparable stones. If the stone you were quoted is good and the price is fair, it still says buy it.

Questions

Asked before sending.

Why is it free?

Every reading also names the comparable stones we hold, and some people buy one of those. The reading of the stone you were quoted is the same either way.

I only have a listing link, no report number.

Send the link. If the listing shows a report we will find the number. If it shows none, that is the first thing to ask the seller for.

Does it work for lab-grown diamonds?

Yes. Lab-grown diamond prices vary more from seller to seller than natural ones, so the price comparison usually matters most.

The stone is already set in a ring.

Send the price for the whole ring and whatever the listing says about the metal. We separate the stone from the setting as far as the listing allows.

What if your price is higher than my quote?

If we hold the same stone, or one of the same shape that is as good or better in weight, colour and clarity, and our price is higher, we may offer ours at 10 per cent under your quote, held for 48 hours. It needs a listing we can see, a price in Canadian dollars for the stone alone, and enough room for us to make our living. The reading tells you either way.

Can I talk it through instead?

Yes. Book thirty minutes on video and bring the report number with you.
